Jair Cabrera was born in Iztapalapa, east of Mexico City. High rates of crime, lack of employment and deficiencies in education are some of the problems faced by its inhabitants. Many young people drop out of school and in the face of difficulty finding work, they are directed to an easier but much more dangerous option: small criminal gangs.<br /> <br /> While many of his friends begin to commit crimes, Jair arrives at the only cultural center in his neighborhood, the Faro de Oriente; and begins to attend a photography workshop taught by Jesús Villaseca, a distinguished photojournalist (National Prize for Journalism, 2003). Jair is caught by the magic of photography and finds in it the way to express himself and occupy his time in a more productive way than the rest of his friends. Jesús Villaseca, like most of his students, grew up in Iztapalapa and has suffered the same violence they experience every day. More than a teacher, he becomes a guide in his life, trying to give them new opportunities.<br /> <br /> While Jair portrays his neighborhood and the lives of his friends, he registers the increase in violence that exists in his surroundings. Now a professional photographer, he sees how many of his neighborhood friends get involved with the big drug trafficking cartels that have come to the Mexican capital despite the fact that the authorities deny it.<br /> But that same violence that Jair has been recording for more than a decade, it’s up to him too. In a coverage in Guerrero, he and other journalists are trapped in the hands of an armed group that will change their lives and their perspective of what is happening in the country.
